A diatopic variation of written form: dialectical features within Garin de Monglane’s manuscript London, BL, Royal 20 D XI
Abstract
The article will present a thorough study of the dialectal features within Garin de Monglane’s manuscript London, BL, Royal 20 D XI. This manuscript has been singled out from all other copies also including the song because of its uniqueness, since it is composed in the françoise language. As such —in the context of its own poetic tradition— it is the only manuscript that allows us to determine the extent to which fourteenth-century local practices had set in, as well as their influence and endurance in the history of French in the fourteenth century, a period characterized precisely, among other linguistic phenomena, by the decline in local scriptae.
