Polyvalence and work intensification: ‘you can do everything’. An analysis of the work done at bank branch level in Spain

Keywords: financial institutions, bank branches, organizational change, business management

Abstract

This article deals with the changes that have taken place in the financial sector in recent years and their impact on the labor market in Spain. For this purpose, through the analysis of the discourses emitted by bank branch employees in our country, the work performed by these individuals is investigated. The results point to an increase in polyvalence, complexity and intensity in the daily development of their functions within a context marked by the reduction in the number of branches and employees, implying a lengthening of working hours and the blurring between work and leisure.
