Fixed-discontinuous work in the agro-industry sector in southeast Europe
Abstract
The production models of the regions of southern Europe have historically shaped local labour markets prototypical of flexible capitalism, where casualisation is one of the basic features of labour relations for a significant part of the working class. In the productive enclave of the Vega Alta del Segura (Region of Murcia), the most stable casual wage relations are formalised through the fixed-discontinuous contract, especially in the agricultural production sector, which is predominant in the area. In order to meet the needs of the workforce in the high season, employers generally resort to temporary employment through temporary employment agencies, which are used to solve the uncertainty of recruitment. Based on qualitative research and consultation of secondary sources, the article mainly analyses the fixed-term contract and the consequences of its application.
