Perverse harmonies between precariousness, segregation and discrimination. Technical workers in live shows as a case study
Abstract
Professions in the technical sections of live shows are deeply segregated due to the fact that most occupations have been traditionally occupied by men. The main goal of this paper is to highlight the main forms of discriminations women in the sector must face taking into account their professional trajectories and working conditions. The analysis pursues the necessity to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms which lead to a successful incorporation of women in segregated occupations and the challenges they confront. The methodological approach has been based on 11 in-depth interviews with professional women in the lighting and sound departments, a focus group with seven professional women working in the sector from different departments and an ethnographical exploration taking advantage of my position as a light technician in several theatrical productions.
