The Etnified Worker: A Conceptual Map for the Sociology of Work
Abstract
The one hundred issues published by the journal Sociología del Trabajo allow us to trace the traces left by the immigrant condition in the social structure of work in Spain, as well as to elaborate research questions that allow us to extend the sociological analysis of work to that carried out by immigrants. This article deals with an approach to the conceptual map of the relationships between ethnicity and work with the following elements: a call for epistemological vigilance so that “imperialist reason” does not impose inappropriate concepts for other contexts such as the Spanish; a demonstration of the realities that the perspective of ethnicity makes visible in the world of work and workers; ongoing changes in the labor market due to ethnic segmentation of work; trade unionism and collective action of immigrant workers, and finally, some considerations on the exploitation of the immigrant body.
