Segregación ocupacional y acoso sexual: la dimensión simbólica de su persistencia
Abstract
The paper presents part of the results of the study "El acoso sexual y por razón de sexo en el mundo laboral: una aproximación cualitativa". The overall objective of this research was to analyse the socio-cultural background that sustains the persistence of sex-based and sexual harassment in the workplace. Specific objectives included identifying, describing, and explaining the social factors that perpetuate the phenomenon.
Considering this study, the paper presents an analysis of sexual harassment and occupational segregation looking into the symbolic dimension within both discriminations. To deep into this issue, the paper presents the empirical evidence obtained through the development of eight discussion groups.
The results show that social imaginaries reflect the weight of traditional gender roles and stereotypes in the workplace. Emerge two symbolic universes, female and male, that coexist but do not communicate. Both realities help to explain the persistence of labor discrimination against women.
