Abstract
The blurred frontier between domestic service and professional care in Brazil.
Reflexions on the commoditization process
The article analyzes some relevant trends on the process of care work commoditiza-tion in Brazil. We argue that this recent process has one main characteristic: there is a blurred frontier between domestic service and professional care work which cau-ses a convergence (on sex, race, education, working conditions) among care wor-kers and maid profiles. This prevents the emergence of solid professional identities among care workers, which is expressed in the way they describe and classify the tasks performed. Those results raise interesting questions for gender scholars and for sociologists of markets.
