Morphological processes of word formation outdated in the sixteenth century: the Ferrara Bible (1553) and the Bible by Casiodoro de Reina (1569)

Abstract

This paper analyses the lexical units included in the Book of Psalms from the Ferrara Bible (1553) in comparison with those from the Bible by Casiodoro de Reina (1569), whose translation is close to the former. The focus will be set on 103 derivatives that Reina replaces with forms that considered more contemporary. The validity of those words in that period in Spanish will be checked, along with their occurrence or absence in some medieval translations that are reported to be close to the Ferrara Bible (especially the translation known as E3) and other coetaneous Ladino texts, such as the Book of Psalms from Constantinople in 1540.
