Els diccionaris de pronúncia del catalá: passat, present i futur

Abstract

Catalan has had a lack of references on pronunciation since the multidialectal ten-volume dictionary of Alcover & Moll (1926/1930-1962/1968). Later on, the first Catalan pronunciation dictionary (Bruguera, 1990, 20042) was compiled, although it was restricted to Central Catalan and offered just one possible pronunciation, so with no variants and few proper names, loanwords and neologisms. Recently, a vocabulary (Paloma & Rico, 2000) of about 2,000 entries was published with two main pronunciations (Central and North Western Catalan). It had an orthoepic purpose and used a broad transcription aimed at Catalan speakers. Even more recently a dictionary which covers the Valencia variety (Lacreu, 2001) was compiled with a large amount of entries but without including any variants or proper names. Finally the work in progress of a forthcoming dictionary which contains about 70,000 entries and over 200,000 pronunciations is introduced. The Diccionari de pronúncia catalana (DPC) is being compiled by Julià-Muné & Creus as a descriptive Catalan pronouncing dictionary that offers the recommended and common use Catalan pronunciation.
