The theme of the arrival of foreigners after a shipwreck
Abstract
In works of different literary genres from the late medieval and the Renaissance periods we record a set of interrelated clichés: a foreigner, alternatively two people either of the same or of different gender, survive(s) a shipwreck where everyone is dead nd everything is lost; after the attention received at first from some fishermen, a great gentleman becomes his/their guest and protector, but his invitation becomes a shaming situation for those who do not wear suitable clothes. At the same time, a search by the spouse(s) begins that will end in a happy meeting. If there is no spouse, the arrival of the foreigner will lead to a love affair. For all these elements it is possible to determine precedents in the Classical literatures, both Latin and Greek. In addition to the explicit intertextual links, there are other parallels that show the importance of the role of reception.
