Cultivating Virtue, Sustaining the Republic: Education in the Political Philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli
Abstract
The main objective of the article is to explore the role of education in Machiavelli's political philosophy. Through the analysis of his main writings, among which The Prince and the Discourses stand out, it is maintained that the Florentine conceives education as a way to achieve that civic virtue whose exercise makes possible the realization of freedom and common good. On this basis, it is argued that this civic formation is made up of three dimensions: the study of the history of ancient people, the military training of rulers and governed, and the cultivation of a religion confluent with an active political life.
