The sophistic Dissoi logoi as an antecedent of the Socratic dialogues: the use of prose in the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.
Abstract
Throughout the following pages, we will review the use of the prosaic form by the sophists and socratics, seeing the influence and relationship between both types of writing. In this regard, we will analyze the antinomian sophistic writings resulting from eristic practices, exemplified by the so-called Dissoi Logoi. We will consider the influence of this writing on the Logoi Sokratikoi developed by the circles of followers of Socrates, seeking to see the correlation in the methodology and argumentative form, as well as the content, of both writings, traditionally considered as representative of opposite positions. We pretend, therefore, to highlight the continuity between the sophistic and socratic currents instead of the usual consideration of both groups as intellectual enemies
