The Wisdom of Greece. The Status of Rhetoric in Emmanuel Levinas› Philosophy
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the rhetoric’s nature in the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. It deals with the reflections on politics and language, where the question of the role played by the rhetoric –as a language intended to persuade– in the ethical dimension is seated. In a first approach to this topic the rhetoric corresponds to the politic language of violence and domination. Nevertheless, we will show that a broad interpretation of Latin rhetoric’s nature –from the “movere”– coincides with the ethical mandate: “Thou shalt not kill”.
