Abstract

This paper analyzes the process of the formation of the concept of genealogy in Foucault’s Penal Theories and Institutions, , where the first practical application of the genealogical method appears. By examining the rules governing the formation of this genealogy, we can gain insights into the limitations and issues associated with its emergence, which are particularly relevant for determining the relevance of the method. Furthermore, the relevance and evolution of this genealogy in Foucault’s works will be considered, along with its conditions of possibility and its non-representational nature. All of this will allow us to update a method that possesses profound epistemic and critical virtues for reflecting upon our present.
