The prism of inequality. Piketty’s contribution to the critique of the present
Abstract
Thomas Piketty’s works make a significant contribution to critical thought. His emphasis on the study of economic inequality has revitalized traditional economic reflection, shifting the focus toward issues of inequity. In this regard, his perspective provides crucial support to social philosophy and its critique of contemporary capitalism. To demonstrate the value of his works, this article will explain the main characteristics of his thought, with a specific focus on the economic dynamic of r > g as presented in Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Subsequently, I will examine some of the solutions he proposes for wealth distribution, as well as his suggestions for promoting fiscal justice. Additionally, I will highlight certain problematic aspects of his theory. Finally, I will briefly analyze Piketty’s contribution in relation to Streeck’s and Harvey’s thoughts.
