Shakespearean Spectres in Nietzsche’s Thought: some Silhouettes on the Philosophical Stage

Keywords: Nietzsche, Shakespeare, literature, tragedy

Abstract

his paper approaches Shakespeare’s status in Nietzsche’s thought by analyzing three moments of his work. First, we will offer some insights into his Dionysian Hamlet interpretation in The Birth of Tragedy, contrasting it with the previous reception of Shakespeare and the Danish Prince in German cultural space. Secondly, we will focus on Nietzsche’s mature transition towards other themes and motives of the Shakespearean universe, which lead to the character of Brutus in Julius Caesar as well as the character named “Shakespeare”. Finally, the epilogue will sum up the complexity of the last encounter of all these Shakespearean spectres, as they are staged in Ecce homo.
