Abstract

In this paper I seek to compare the argumentative pattern of the Sophists of fifth Century B.C. as they are depicted in Plato’s works with that of the Eristics of the Euthydemus. I will argue that none of these Sophists is presented by Plato as an expert in refutative Dialectics, the discursive activity that characterizes Eristics. On the contrary, the platonic portrait of Podicus, Hippias, Gorgias and Protagoras shows them as incapable, disinterested or resistant to the dialectic style of argumentation.
