Reflections on Europe, migration and co-development
Abstract
This article makes a general review of the way in which the countries of the European Union have approached and are approaching migration issues, taking into account the different periods and the different positions of each of the large European blocs: the Western bloc, the Eastern bloc and, within the Western bloc itself, the different positions of the countries with an old migration tradition – such as France, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Sweden – and the countries with a new migration tradition – such as Portugal, Spain and, to some extent, Italy –. The aim is to draw up a balance sheet from which to analyse the main organising axes of the way in which migration and migration policies are viewed and, from there, to reflect on what is happening today.
