Media monopolies, justice and democracy in Brazil
Abstract
In Brazil, like in Honduras and Paraguay, the media and certain judges have claimed to be the guardians of democracy. The media have stressed their “freedom of expression” while the judges have alleged to be acting in the name of “justice”. A democracy of this sort is tailored to suit the economic and political aspirations of traditional elites who have seen their privileges diminish during the last decade due to the action of progressive governments (Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil).
