The border integration between the Argentine North Patagonia and the Chilean South: Socio-economic practices, political positions, and unfinished projects
Abstract
The bordering provinces of northern Argentine Patagonia and southern Chile are far from the political capitals and the most important economic centres of their respective nation states. The existence of numerous mountains passes, and flexible economic strategies made their integration possible until well into the first decade of the 20th century, with special reference to the livestock trade as the dominant activity. Then, various circumstances led to advances and setbacks in the framework of different national policies and regional projects that will be analysed in this paper, many of them unfinished, as is the case of the Trans-Andean Southern Railway (Ferrocarril Trasandino del Sur). Only new political decisions will make it possible to restore the old situation of socioeconomic integration between the two regions.
