Abstract

Science and Art have more things in common than differences: both disciplines are based on experimentation, observation and searching for new ideas which open new frontiers, and sometimes merge as unique objects. This is the case of Fragonard’s écorchés, recognized and admired at the time by scientists and artists of the French society in the eighteenth century. Fragonard made his first exhibition of anatomical specimens at the Veterinary School of Lyon, and subsequently prepared thousands of pieces in the National Veterinary School of Alfort Alfort. In the Fragonard Museum of the National Veterinary School of Alfort (ENVA, Paris, France) some of theses pieces are still conserved and exhibited. Among its écorchés highlights Le cavalier (The rider) that depicts a rider and his horse "riding off into eternity".
