The Limits of Culture and of Theories of Identity: an Interview with Alejandro Grimson
Abstract
In the following interview we discuss with the Argentinian anthropologist Alejandro Grimson some of the ideas contained in his book “The limits of culture. A critique of theories of identity”, published by Siglo XXI in 2011 and awarded best book in 2012 by LASA (Latin American Studies Association). He suggests the differentiation between the concept of culture and identity and puts forward, from a post-constructivist perspective, the theorethical and methodological heuristic tool he calls cultural configuration. He seeks to interpret through it the contextually specific articulations between hetergeneity, understood as diversity or difference, and the inequality, understood as hierarchisation. Migration studies in the case of Argentina and Spain are specifically discussed.Downloads
