Gratitude and cancer: a bibliometric analysis of scientific production in Scopus (1991-2024)

Keywords: gratitude, cancer, psycho-oncology, bibliometrics

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer is a devastating disease that affects millions of people
worldwide, has increased in incidence and prevalence, and remains a major challenge for health
systems in all countries. Psychologically, the diagnosis triggers a variety of negative emotions,
although it can also lead to positive and adaptive responses influenced by available psychosocial
resources. Gratitude emerges as a key factor in this context, with potential to expand the
emotional and cognitive resources of the actors involved. Despite this, the relationship between
gratitude and cancer has not been examined from bibliometrics to date. Objective: this study
aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of gratitude and its relationship with cancer. Methods:
A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was employed using Scopus as a data source, revealing
158 papers published between 1991 and 2024. Results: Scientific production has experienced
an annual growth of 4.66%, with the United States leading in both production and impact.
Journals such as Cancer Nursing and Psycho-Oncology stand out in the publication of papers
on this subject. Likewise, the most cited studies focus on the spiritual needs of patients and the
relationship between gratitude and social support. International collaboration is notable, with the
United States and Italy leading research in this area. Conclusion: The findings reveal the growing
importance of gratitude in the context of cancer and highlight key areas for future research.
