Abstract
Despite the fact that we consider Genji Monogatari as arguably the first psychological novel in history, its popularity in Japan was partly due to the poems it contained and to the images created by illustrators throughout time. Ogata Gekkō was one of the last artists who applied the classic ukiyo-e craftmanship. In their illustrations he selected one poem in every chapter, which was the poetic center of the narrative scene. Professor David Almazán Tomás presents a translation, an analysis and a gloss of Ogata Gekkō’s illustrations which functions both as a study and as a guide of the novel.
