Butoh Dance and «Hybrid» Dances in Latin America
Abstract
This paper shows a panoramic view of cultural exchanges between Japan and Latin America in the field of performing arts, especially related to the butoh dance in the 21st century. New aesthetic forms of the Japanese «dance of darkness», which broke the «occidental» concept, were introduced to various countries of Latin America: Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Argentina. This phenomenon, developed through dancer/teacher exchange, generated certain dance «hybridity» in different ways. In addition, it contributed to creating a countercultural space in the scenic arts linked to the social situations in each country. The history and hybridity of butoh in Latin America is described in the present work through the analysis of diverse artistic and contextual elements.
