Abstract

Using unpublished sources from the archives of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this study immerses in the life and, above all, the death of a Japanese individual, almost completely unknown, who emigrated to the islands of Pacific Ocean under the rule of Spain at the end of the 19th century. His death at the hands of a native islander offers us a hitherto unknown perspective on the interactions between Japanese emigrants and Spanish colonial agents in one of the most remote and least protected frontier areas of Spain during the dawn of the Japanese empire and the eclipse of the Spanish empire.
