How Spanish and Japanese school textbooks build a stereotyped image of Europe, Asia and our country
Abstract
This paper is a comparative study between textbooks from two countries, Spain and Japan. We use discourse analysis to discover how Social Science textbooks build stereotypes on the representation of Europe and Asia, as well as their possible influences on the images of the own country, Spain or Japan. We analyze the terms "Europe" and "Asia" from four different perspectives. The results show that, in addition to some discourse strategies, the underlying idea of Western ethnocentrism plays an important role on the formation of stereotypical images of Europe and Asia and our country.Downloads
