The body and symbolic embodimente as a form of mediation
Abstract
Traditionally Western thought, heavily influenced by Platonic and Cartesian assumptions, has given pride of place to the mind and body has been relegated to a lower position or subsidiary. However, in this paper we argue, first, that all experience is mediated by the physical and symbolic physicality. And second, that the corporeality (social body) is a form of mediation, key in social interaction, allowing the expression, transmission and communication between individuals and groups. In addition, the body is also mediated by socializing institutions and socio-cultural frames, communication and media frameworks in which it is inserted. In this regard and as an illustration we will refer to the powerful role that media and information technologies have on the physical and symbolic body.Downloads
