APA 7TH EDITION CITATION GUIDELINES

*Adapted from https://biblioguias.ucm.es/estilo-apa-septima

IN-TEXT CITATIONS

  • APA style uses in-text citations.
  • The citation system is author-date: author's last name followed by the year of publication.
  • For undated works, use the abbreviation “s.f.” (sin fecha) or "n.d." (no date). For accepted but unpublished journal articles, use “en prensa” or "in press."
  • In citations initials are not included unless distinguishing between different authors with identical last names.
  • When a parenthetical quotation at the end of a sentence is inserted, the appropriate punctuation mark is inserted after the closing parenthesis:

Falsely balanced news coverage can distort the public's perception of expert consensus on an issue (Koehler, 2016).

  • In narrative quotations, the author's name appears within the text, followed by the date in parentheses. In some cases, both elements can appear in the text without using parentheses:

Koehler (2016) noted the dangers of falsely balanced news coverage.

In 2016, Koehler noted the dangers of falsely balanced news coverage.

  • In parenthetical quotations, an ampersand [&] is used between the names for a work with two authors or before the last author when it is necessary to include all names to avoid ambiguity. In narrative quotations, the conjunction "and" is used.

(Hare & O’Neill, 2000)

Hare and O’Neill (2000)

  • If the direct quotation is less than 40 words, the text is enclosed in quotation marks. If it is inserted at the end of a sentence, the quoted fragment is enclosed in quotation marks, followed immediately by the source in parentheses, and ending with a period after the parentheses.
When the quotation is 40 words or more, it is inserted in a new block paragraph, without quotation marks, and with an additional 1.27 cm indent on the left margin. At the end, the corresponding citation is added, this time after the period.
  • When the cited document has two authors, both are always cited.
  • Citations of works with three or more authors are shortened from the first instance. The last name of the first author is included, followed by "et al."

(Joly et al., 2008)

Joly et al. al (2008)

  • When citing several works within the same parentheses, they are ordered chronologically if they are by the same author. The author's last name is cited once, and for each cited work, only the year is indicated.

(Department of Veterans Affairs, n.d., 2017a, 2017b, 2019)

  • If the authors are different, they are listed alphabetically, separated by semicolons:

(Adams et al., 2019; Shumway & Shuman, 2015; Westinghouse, 2017)

  • For works by the same author published in the same year, differentiate them by adding the letters a, b, c, d, and so on after the year:

(Suárez, 2009a, 2009b, 2009c)

BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES

  • Entries are ordered alphabetically by the first author's last name, separated by a comma from their initials (see note below, as it is necessary to include the full name, not just the initials). If in doubt about the correct format, check how the author usually signs in previous publications to see the commonly used style.

Note: Ingenium, in accordance with the policy of best practices on gender issues (https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/inge/genero), reminds authors that it is necessary to include the full names of the authors of the cited and referenced works in the bibliography.

  • Up to 20 authors may be included, separated by commas and including an ampersand (&) before the last author. In the seventh edition of the APA Publication Manual (English), a comma (,") is placed before the ampersand.
  • When the work has 21 or more authors, the first 19 are included, then three ellipses are inserted and the name of the last author is added:

Kalnay, E., Kanamitsu, M., Kistler, R., Collins, W., Deaven, D., Gandin, L., Iredell, M., Saha, S., White, G., Woolen, J., Zhu, Y., Chelliah, M., Ebisuzaki, W., Higgings, W., Janowiak, J., Mo, K. C., Ropelewski, C., Wang, J., Leetmaa, A., ... Joseph, D. (1996). The NCEP/NCAR 40-year reanalysis project. Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 77(3), 437-471. http://doi.org/fg6rf9

  • Works by the same author are ordered chronologically by year of publication, from oldest to most recent. Works without a date are listed first, and articles in press are listed last:

Patel, S. N. (n.d.).

Patel, S. N. (2016).

Patel, S. N. (2020a).

Patel, S. N. (2020b).

  • When the editor of a book is an editor or editors, their name is placed in the author's field, and the abbreviation Ed. or Eds. is written in parentheses after the last editor's surname:

Wong, C. T., & Music, K. (Eds.).

  • When the author and editor are the same person, the editor's name is omitted from the source:

World Health Organization. (2019). International statistical classification of diseases and related health problems (11th ed.). https://icd.who.int/

  • When the reference has an assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it should be included using the format: https://doi.org/xxxxxx

Whenever the work includes a DOI, it should be added to the reference regardless of the version consulted (print or electronic).

If it does not have an assigned DOI and the document was consulted online, the URL should be included: https://www.xxxxxx

When referencing both a URL and a DOI as a hyperlink (http:// or https://), it is not necessary to include the phrase "Retrieved from" or "Available at," since the link directs us to the content.

Avoid adding a period after the URL or the DOI in order to avoid errors in document retrieval.
