Abstract

Among the different events of the “long experience of modern things” alluded by Machiavelli in The Prince’s dedicatory letter, his diplomatic missions visiting Cesar Borgia seems to be particularly signifi-cant. The Florentine Secretary was together with Borgia in three determinant moments of Borgia’s political undertaking: first, when his project was beginning to consolidate; later on, during the critical moment of his allies’ conspiracy; lastly, at the times of his fast and definitive fall. Because of the events developed and because of the wide learning that Machiavelli could attain from each of all these en-counters, the Borgian experience represents a fun-damental point of reference in the foundation of Machiavellian thought.
