When Iberia was also Hispania. The peninsular geography of the republican era through the Latin authors

Keywords: Livy, Caesar, Augustus, Agrippa, Pliny the Elder, Iberia, Hispania

Abstract

The prevalence of the Greek mirror in the identity constructions generated in Iberia has meant that the Roman prism or, rather, studies focused on Latin literary sources have not been lavished. For this reason, our aim in this paper is to assess the weight of certain Latin authors in the progressive ethno-geographical construction of the Iberian Peninsula during the conquest period. Thus, we will approach works of a very disparate nature ‒Livy’s AUC, Caesar’s production, the RG or Plinius’ NH‒ which, for these contexts, have been overshadowed by Strabo’s Geography and his illustrious predecessors.
