Abstract

The propagation of an edge wave through a system of two groins perpendicular to the coastline is studied. A simple idealized beach profile with a steep foreshore, a plane slope and a horizontal shelf on an infinitely long straight shoreline is considered. The solution in each region delimited by the structures is expressed as a linear combination of an incident or transmitted wave, a wave reflected and the evanescent modes that exist in the neighborhood of the structures. The solution to the problem is obtained by an iterative mode matching method including the head loss at the groins. For a given beach configuration, the amplitude of the partial stationary waves resulting at the incident region and in the region between structures is maximum for distances between structures about an odd multiple of L/4, where L is the wavelength. This may explain the existence of rhythmic features between groins under certain conditions. 25 A. Baquerizo y M. A. Losada Propagación de ondas de borde a través de un sistema... 1.
