Abstract

The more important harmonic tidal characteristics from monthly level data series recorded at seven strategic locations of Guadalquivir estuary have been obtained. In order to provide a physical interpretation of the unexpected behavior that is come off the analysis of the results, an analytical model has been developed. The results show an excellent agreement with respect to the observational data, due to the peculiar bathymetry and geometry of the Guadalquivir. The analysis of results allow to interpret the weak damping that undergoes the amplitude of the semidiurnal components, specially M2, th 11 O. The explanation of this behaviour is found in the resonant characteristics of the estuary for the semidiurnal M2 constituent. This phenomenon does not arise from natural way, but as a result of the human actions made in the channel. The presence of the tidal barrier in Sevilla and the dredged nearly constant depth, turn to the estuary into a semienclosed body that generate resonance for the wave of period 12.42 hours.
