Author Guidelines

The journal Cuadernos de Relaciones Laborales, with ISSN 1131-8635, ISSNe: 1988-2572 and Legal Deposit: 16908-1992, edited by the Escuela Profesional de Relaciones Laborales and published by the Publications Service of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, aims to disseminate studies of an academic nature and critical inspiration linked to work, employment, labour relations, and, more broadly, to social cohesion and the main dimensions of the contemporary social question, with a multidisciplinary approach spanning sociology, law, anthropology, philosophy, economics and psychology. It is published twice a year and was founded in 1992. It includes articles, reviews and, exceptionally, technical notes, and accepts original works in both Spanish and English.

1. Submission of manuscripts

— Articles must follow these formatting guidelines:

  • Title in Spanish and in English. The title should reflect the content of the article as precisely as possible.
  • A brief abstract of between 80 and 150 words in Spanish and another in English. This abstract must set out the objectives of the study, the basic procedures and methods used, and the main findings.
  • Between 4 and 8 keywords in Spanish and in English.
  • Table of contents in Spanish.

— The content of the manuscript must comply with the following rules:

  • Articles must be a minimum of 7,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words. Reviews must not exceed 2,000 words and must analyse books related to the topics covered by the journal.
  • Submitted articles will undergo preliminary review using plagiarism-detection software.
  • Text style:
    1. Arial 11 font, exact line spacing at 12 pt.
    2. The first line of the first paragraph of each section heading shall have no indent.
    3. All remaining paragraphs shall have a standard indent of 0.5 cm.
    4. The article title (in Spanish and English) shall be in Arial, bold, size 15, centred. First-level section headings shall be numbered, in Arial, bold, size 13, left-justified. The same style, size and font shall apply to second-level headings, which shall also be numbered. Third-level headings shall be unnumbered, in Arial, size 11, bold and italic. See the following example:
        1. First-level heading
      • 1.1. Second-level heading
      • Third-level heading
    5. Quotations exceeding 4 lines shall be indented 1 cm from the left margin and set in Arial 10, exact line spacing at 12 pt, without quotation marks.
    6. Footnotes shall be in Arial 9, single line spacing, with a 0.5 cm indent.
    7. Titles and sources of tables, charts and figures shall be centred in Arial and always placed outside the graphic element.
    8. Bibliographic references shall use Arial, 11 pt, line spacing 12 pt, and a hanging indent of 0.5 cm.

— The article cover page must include the following:

  • Article title in Spanish; article title in English.
  • Author(s): first name and surname(s) (the latter in capitals), full name of the University or Institution, Department, email address and ORCID number.
  • Abstract: text in Spanish, between 80 and 150 words.
  • Keywords: each article must carry between three and five keywords.
  • English translation of the abstract and keywords.
  • Table of contents (in the language of the article): numbered section headings, including conclusions and bibliographic references.

— Tables and charts must be produced without the use of colour, as the journal does not incorporate different colours — bold excepted — in its edition. All tables and charts must be numbered with consecutive Arabic numerals. They must carry a concise title reflecting their content, and the source must be cited in the caption even if self-produced, in which case the note shall read: "own elaboration". They must be embedded in the text at the appropriate point, and the original file from the application used (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) must be submitted as a separate attachment. Authors should take particular care when including tables and charts, bearing in mind that the journal — both in print and digital form — is published in black and white.

— The citation and reference system is based on the Harvard style, so in-text citations follow the author-date format (author, year: page).

— Bibliographic references shall be inserted at the end of the text in alphabetical order by author and, except in the case of books, shall indicate the first and last page. For articles and e-books it is essential that citations include a link to their DOI and that this link is verified as active.

— Every entry in the bibliography must correspond to an in-text citation, and every in-text citation must appear in the bibliography.

— References to authors cited in the body of the text shall be made as follows:

  • In parentheses, citing the author's surname in lower case, followed by a comma and the year and, where necessary, the page or pages of the publication. E.g.: (Alaluf, 1986: 31).
  • If more than one work by the same author published in the same year is cited, they shall be distinguished from one another by adding a lower-case letter after the year and within the parentheses. E.g.: (Meda, 2013a).
  • Documents with two authors are cited by their first surnames joined by "and". E.g.: (Miguélez and Prieto, 1999).
  • For documents with more than three authors, the citation shall be abbreviated to the surname of the first author only, followed by "et al."
  • If two publications by the same author from different years are to be cited, the years must appear in sequence separated by a semicolon. E.g.: (Torns, 2001; 2004).
  • When citing an institution, its full name must be included the first time it is cited. E.g.: (European Union, 2015).

— Bibliographic references must be listed alphabetically at the end of the text, in accordance with the following examples:
