Differential labour precariousness in Europe: a proposal for a synthetic indicator to measure its progress

Keywords: synthetic indicator, labour market, precariousness, European Union, pandemic

Abstract

The present study offers an analysis of European labour precariousness in recent years (2007-2021) based on the construction of a synthetic indicator that measures the deterioration of working conditions in countries of the European Union (EU). With this objective, it proposes, on the one hand, the detection of the main dimensions affected by the extension of European labour precariousness, and on the other, the detection of the variables that, in each of the levels, describes this worsening in the different community areas. All this with the purpose of having an indicator capable of measuring the advance of labour precariousness in European markets, detecting, in turn, the regional and gender disparities that this problem registers. The results obtained allows to open the reflection about the economic and institutional factors that would explain the geographical divergences and the unequal advance in both sexes.
