The social construction of competitive advantage in platform capitalism: a case study of Glovo (2015–2024)
Abstract
In this article, we propose to summarise the process of disputes and consolidation of the Glovo company in Spain, based on some of the most significant elements of its particular production and labour model. Using various data sources—corporate discourse, labour discourse and other documentary sources—we summarise and analyse some of the characteristics that help to explain, retrospectively, the shift from a model of free flexploitation—in force between 2015 and 2024—to the announced labourisation of Glovo delivery workers in Spain. In conclusion, this case study seeks to contribute to an overall interpretation to better understand the past decade of labour, political, legal and media tensions surrounding the institutionalisation of platform work in Spain.
