Bad times for lyric. Is there still a future for archaeological science at Spanish universities?
Abstract
This paper reviews the current status of Archaeological Science, also known as Archaeometry and institutionally yet unrecognized, in Spanish universities. In undertaking such review those parameters that define an academic discipline, namely the existence of an autonomous body of knowledge, recognized practitioners and professional groups, places where research and training are carried out, specific journals and publications, or conferences and meetings to disseminate research findings, were analyzed. From this perspective, selected parameters suggest a poor and marginal development of the Archaeological Science into Spanish university institutions. The paper hence tryes to open a discussion in the Spanish Archaeology to assess the future of this discipline in a time in which, according to brought data, it seems that no enough effort has been made to allow an effective development in the next years.
