The urban layout of the vetton hillfort of El Raso (Candela, Ávila)
Abstract
This paper presents a proposal for the reconstruction of the urban layout of the Vettón hillfort of El Raso (Candeleda, Ávila) based on a combined analysis of the legacy of the excavations at the site until the 90s of the 20th century and the new research based on non invasive methods (remote sensing and geophysics). If the former provides detailed knowledge of the configuration of the domestic spaces and the sequence of occupation of the site, the latter help us to advance in the definition of the internal spatial organization of the entire settlement. Valued together, all this knowledge reveals the configuration of the habitat according to an urban model that stands out for its density and regularity. This new knowledge allows us to approach how the social logic of the space shapes the morphology of urban landscapes of this kind of settlements. We can therefore put the site in the historical context of the last stages of the Late Iron Age and assess essential parameters to understand the scale of the community such as the demographic estimates. These results are compared with the urban layout detected in other hillforts in the same cultural area, confronting the different conceptual models managed by researchers about the topic of protohistoric urbanism in the western part of the Peninsular Plateau.
