The Spanish Civil War in the Brazilian Press (1936-1939)
Abstract
The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) occurred while Brazil was in turmoil political process: it had suffered a communist coup attempt and Getúlio Vargas was ready to implement a fascistic dictatorship. The news that came from Spain and disseminated through the newspapers was interpreted as a reflection of the ideological clash that was also taking place in Brazil. For this reason, it is important to study the headlines of these publications to have an analysis of how the actions of the censors, the official and unofficial representatives, and the sympathizers and opponents of Vargas intervened in the dissemination of the news and in the perception of Brazilians in relation to the Spanish conflict.
