Kenya and the Shifta War. Regional and international actors in a civil conflict (1963-1967)
Abstract
This study looks at the Shifta War in order to delve into the actors involved in this civil conflict that took place in Kenya in 1963-1967. The Shifta confrontation included the Kenyan government, the Somali guerrillas who inhabited the North Frontier District and who advocated secession. In addition, we must examine the role played by external actors such as the Somali Republic, which supported the Shifta guerrillas with weapons, and Britain, whose assistance was essential to Kenya. In addition, the role of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) as a promoter of peace has been analysed. In order to carry out this research, a literature review was conducted and primary documentation was analysed, including local and international newspaper sources, audio-visual resources from the period, parliamentary proceedings, speeches by various politicians, reports and official documentation from international institutions.
