A speaker at the tribune: seven hours with Francisco Romero Robledo (17-18 November 1871)
Abstract
At the Parliament session on 17 November 1871, during Amadeo 1st of Savoy’s reign, José Malcampo’s government, linked to progress leader Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, faced a vote of no confidence by the Radical Party, which Manuel Ruiz Zorrilla led. In order to protect the interest of the government a supporter of it, member of Parliament Francisco Romero Robledo, improvised a seven-hour speech at the tribune. Thus, he made time for Malcampo to get the King’s decree to dissolve Congress and avoid the aforementioned vote of no confidence. In this article I analyse the historical context and the content of Romero’s speech, highlighting the main topics that he addressed. Doing so, I will draw the profile of the speaker, and I will shape the Spanish political atmosphere eleven months after the King’s coronation.
