A heavy Cross to bear. Labor camps at the Valley of the Fallen (1943-1950)
Abstract
Hidden by the overwhelming scale of the francoist monument of the Valley of the Fallen, the history of the labor camps that built it has been largely forgotten. This paper uses new sources and an interdisciplinary approach to recover the history of the three camps at Cuelgamuros -San Román, Banús and Molán-, that fed the construction of the site with forced laborers, mostly political convicts and POWs.
