Private enterprise in the formation of the Spanish tourism system in the first third of the 20th century (1900-1931). The case of the hotel industry

Abstract

During the first third of the 20th century, the first tourism system was formed in Spain based on a reality that already existed at the end of the 19th century in some of its territories. Numerous agents, both public and private, came together in this system within the framework of the birth of what has been called modern tourism. So, the aim of this article is to delve into the role that private initiative had in this system and, more specifically, the companies and entrepreneurs who saw tourism as a business opportunity, becoming service providers for tourists. To do this, I will focus on the hotel industry, analyzing the different existing sources to study its evolution in the first third of the 20th century
