Conservatism and democracy in Argentina. Intellectual formulations and political reflections in liberal thought, 1912-1943
Abstract
The article explores the relationship between liberalism and democracy in Argentine political thought. Usually, liberalism has been characterized as "conservative" to portray an authoritarian or anti-democratic liberalism, which therefore would be a fundamental factor in the difficulties and crisis of democracy in Argentina in the 20th century. This article takes another perspective: it shows that there were expressions of Argentine liberal thought that can be defined as conservative and, at the same time, democratic. To do this, the paper studies texts and writings of politicians and intellectuals from the first half of the 20th century, including Julio Costa, Norberto Piñero, José Bianco and Mariano de Vedia y Mitre.
