Surviving barbarism: comics as a lifeline against jihadist terrorism
Abstract
This article analyses how the graphic novel is a particularly suitable medium to record a violent event, to tell the story of trauma, as a cathartic mode of expression and a means of political communication. It does so through the analysis of Catharsis de Luz (2015) and La légèreté de Catherine Meurisse (2016), two cartoonists from Charlie Hebdo's editorial staff who, for opposite reasons, arrived late to the conference of January 7, 2015 and were audio witnesses of the slaughter. The narrative and graphic analysis is preceded by a brief history of the weekly paper and the controversies it generated, which allows a better understanding of the scope of the two works.
