The hammer and the anvil. The cultural memory of the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship in Spanish comics (1975-2020)
Abstract
This paper studies the role of adult comics in the construction of cultural memory in Spain, from their origins during the Transition to Democracy to the present. Through the analysis of representations of both the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship in comics, with particular attention to political violence, this article aims to identify the specific characteristics of this cultural production within recent historical memory, highlighting its attention to repression and resistance from and on everyday life. We will also analyze the political positions taken by authors as public intellectuals in response to changes in public debate about the recent past.
