Marisol and Pepa Flores. The political meanings of a star (1960-1985)
Abstract
Marisol/Pepa Flores was one of the most popular icons of the second half of the twentieth century. I would argue that the analysis of this star is relevant to the study of social and political changes in Spain from 1960 to 1985. This research analyzes the different political meanings the celebrity adopted in different contexts, emphasizing that they were not happening linearly over time, and that these new connotations did not fully displace the old ones. On the contrary, all these meanings coexisted, highlighting the capacity of a cultural figure to work politically in opposite directions.
