Book Fairs and the Field of Power: The Politicians and the Symbolic Capital at the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Polemics between Mexico and France about Being Guest of Honour in 2017
Abstract
Relying on the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, this article focusses on the interferences between the literary field and the field of power produced in the context of the Frankfurt Book Fair. After a short summary of the presentations of Argentina and Brasil as the fair’s guests of honour in 2010 and 2013, the article reconstructs and evaluates the controversial selection process of the guest of honor for 2017 between Mexico and France. Finally, the article analyzes the public speeches of French politicians Manuel Valls and Emmanuel Macron at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2016 and 2017, emphasizing the rhetorical strategies that permit them to take hold of the fair’s symbolic capital in order to promote their different political agendas.
