The Book Fairs of Madrid (1933-1936) as republican festivals
Abstract
This article analyzes the origin and political context of the first Madrid Book Fairs. This initiative, promoted by the editors of the thirties, is one of the most successful and longest in the world of books in Spanish. In addition, it supposed the culmination of the book’s policy, where professionals, authorities and the public came together, and contributed to the social dissemination of books and reading during that period. The fairs were born under the cultural project of the young democracy and citizen participation in mass society. Finally, due to their popularity, they had a projection in the provinces thanks to the bookstore trucks of the Spanish Editors Association.
