Cesare Pavese in the origins of Italo Calvino’s writing: the Tesi on Conrad
Abstract
Cesare Pavese’s looms large in the early apprenticeship of Italo Calvino. His influence in the literary and journalistic early writings of the young novelist is well known as well as his decisive responsibility in Calvino’s work at Einaudi. This particular moment in his career is well attested in an unpublished work, his M. A. Thesis on Joseph Conrad. Pavese’s presence can be traced in the development of Calvino’s analysis of Conrad’s work where he acknowledges his master’s insights while taking his distance from some of his positions, following on occasion diferent and foreign sources. He also shows his intellectual independence through his admiration for intellectual figures and positions alien to Pavese’s own predicament.Downloads
